COMMON SENSE TODAY
WITH A VISION FOR TOMORROW
Why Should You Vote For Me?
A vote for me on March 9 means a return of decorum and respect to the dais. It means restoring trust in government by ensuring a code of ethics that will hold our elected of?cials to the highest standards of integrity and will prevent con?icts of interest, real or perceived. It means we will move forward with town business through ?scally responsible decisions, listening to our boards, committees and the voice of the residents. It means greater transparency and accountability. It means a commissioner who WILL read contracts and not mislead you as to what is in those contracts. I will never challenge residents to debate me. I will not make you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable if you choose to speak out at public comments. If you have concerns I will sit down and listen to you and we will work together. I will work to maintain and grow our business community through roundtables and ?nd solutions that meet the common interest of residents and businesses. I will
be YOUR voice. That is the job of your elected of?cials. I understand that and I will never take that for granted. I will not work for the politics, I will work for the people. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard and to participate in this very important election. My name is Chris Vincent and I am asking for your trust and vote.
I support the adoption of a code of ethics to assist with the governing of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea elected officials. It’s an issue at the forefront in all levels of government due to widespread ethics violations we have read about in the news. I feel strongly that every municipality should be actively tightening up on ethics codes and looking to implement additional safeguards to protect against wrong doing on the part ofelected officials. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea should be included in this endeavor. Unfortunately right now we appear to be the exception, when looking at the progress being made in other towns and the Broward County Commission. Personally, I have a system of morals and values that I was taught at a young age. I use these to guide me in my work and raising my daughter. It is important to me to lead by example. Therefore, I support the inclusion of a provision to make it clear that elected officials are not allowed to sit on a board or consult with any vendor/company currently contracted or looking to contract with the town regardless of compensation. Government relies on trust, we expect our public officials to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. The best way to guarantee public trust is to ensure transparency in the process. It’s what I have seen lacking from certain members of the dais and what I promise to return to the commission if I am elected to serve.
Our charter is clear on what the code is for height limits. Three referendums were put on the ballot and voted for by the residents of this town and the will of the people was served. I feel the voters did get it right the last time. The current height limits are critical to maintain our quaint seaside town. We are currently protected from any further increase in height. Lowering height limits from where they are today could open the town up to additional Bert J. Harris litigation. It would also restrict any future designs of existing properties to conform with local codes and building requirements should they intend to improve or renovate. For instance, we have buildings that would lose valuable square footage if they were to renovate and have to meet current code requirements. Taking away 11 feet from the existing height limit east on El Mar Drive would prevent them from replacing the square footage lost. This would significantly impact and discourage improvement. Any additional restrictions would only reduce our property values and potentially put our town at risk financially. Due to an already stalled economic climate that could last for many years to come, we should be proactive in assisting our residents and local businesses with the support they need. It would be helpful to have a round table to allow the citizens and commercial business owners to sit down with the commission and have their concerns heard. We could then find out what areas of our height limits language is confusing to them and make it more understanding.
The safety of our community and our residents is the most important priority of our town government. I am committed to ensuring residents of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea that we will continue to provide the best service possible. AMR and the VFD have proven themselves in the past year. AMR provides quality emergency medical services and has made a commitment to be part of the community through involvement in town-sponsored events, meeting with commissioners on a rotating basis to update them on medical calls, working alongside the VFD and adding to their equipment onboard emergency vehicles. The VFD is working hard to re-establish itself as a fine organization with its recent elections and continuing training exercises. I feel the organization will grow and thrive. BSO is our long-time police agency. Through BSO we are able to provide the town with highly trained and experienced officers while watching the crime rate go down. The department has worked to come up with a hybrid schedule that better suits the town. BSO has joined the VFD in patrolling the beaches, and has been active in our town-sponsored hurricane and health programs for the residents. As a commissioner, I will hold the VFD, AMR and BSO fully accountable to the residents of our town. I will encourage our public safety vendors to continue to be proactive with public education for fire and crime prevention, public safety and health. I would also encourage residents to visit our public safety facilities as I have, and voice their thoughts directly to the fine men and women of these agencies. Our current public safety vendors are accessible and would welcome
your questions. To pay for public safety, I would maintain an ad valorem tax for BSO and AMR. I would maintain VFD fire through a non- sliding scale fire assessment which we currently do. A non-sliding scale applies the assessment equally.
Future Vision of LBTS:
My vision for the town 10 years from now would be to drive over the Commercial bridge and see beautifully maintained landscaping, clean streets and businesses that are open and thriving. On a tour through the neighborhood streets, I would see homes well maintained through pride of ownership. Residents walking, biking, enjoying what this wonderful town has to offer. Walking down El Mar Drive I would see charming hotels and homes, the blue ocean, our unique beach portals, palm trees swaying in the breeze, folks sitting on the benches watching the surf roll in. All of this while maintaining open green space and being able to enjoy the
beach and ocean views without obstruction. If elected for the next four years, I will listen to and work with the citizens and businesses when implementing new policies. I will work towards making sure your needs are being met while not veering from our existing Charter. When we work together as a community there is nothing we cannot overcome. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea should continue to be a quaint seaside village that you want to live in or return to as a visitor.
